L1000 VS K370

Hi all,
We have 1 L1000 server with 2 CPU's at 360 Mhz, 2 Gb of RAM and disks FW/SCSI and we have problems with CPU at compilation time.
Do you think that 1 K370 server with 3 or 4 CPU's at 200 Mhz, 4 Gb of RAM and 1 Fibber Channel disk array would give better performance ?
Thanks in advance,
Manuel

Hi
It should give you almost the same performance .but the architecture is different

Re: L1000 VS K370

Hi Manuel,

for compilation the faster CPU is always better, regardless of the number of CPUs. L1000 with 2 CPUs 360MHz will be better than K370. Make sure that you have swap space at least 4GB, and try to set kernel parameter swapmem_on to 0.

Re: L1000 VS K370

Hi Manuel, yes the K370 with 4 CPUs is going to almost twice as fast as the L1000 with 2 CPUs, see below:

K370 w/ 4x200MHz CPUs Transaction per minute (TPM) is 21,350
L1000 w/ 2x360MHz CPUs Transaction per minute (TPM) is 13,500

These TPM number were taken from an HP 9000 enterprise server configuration guide, so I don't have a link to send you..

Re: L1000 VS K370

Jesse,

Slight correction, the 21,000 number is for 6 CPUs.

Due to the increased bus speed and the problems of scalability, I would expect the L1000 to give better performance in every situation, unless perhaps you are running multiple instances of a single threaded program.

Re: L1000 VS K370

my bad, 21,350 TPM is for 6 CPU's not 4.. well it sounded like the guy already had a K370 so rather than buying or fixing the faulty L1000, it would probably be more cost effective to just use what he already has if its going to be better. As for scalability, it looks like all he needs is 4GB memory and a FC card for his array, the K370 can do that, the only real draw back is that 4GB memory is the max and you cant use PCI cards on the K370. 2135

Re: L1000 VS K370

One advantage of the K370 is that you could go to 6 CPUs very easily, and probably for a few hundred dollars.

Re: L1000 VS K370

This is not enough information to answer correctly. Is this a single compilation with no other competing processes? If so, you'll see a slight advantage with the L1000. The quantity of CPUs has no advantage for a single process. If you are running 4 compilations at the same time then the K370 will outperform the L1000 by a wide margin. Compilations are tricky to bencmark as they are a mix of disk I/O and CPU time. These two machines are very close in overall performance.

Re: L1000 VS K370

Unkown. CPUs performance will be slighly greater on the L1000 for most codes as it has faster memory and more bandwidth (30%), all other things equal, which they are not. The 2X RAM may make the K370 much faster, but that depends totally on the applications need for RAM. Fiber has more latency than SCSI, but the array may be faster? I'd take the new rp3410 over either if I were a betting man.
