Lan interfaces Gigabit Ethernet for a 9000/800/L2000-44

Hi,

I would like to know what model of Gigabit Ethernet lan interfaces could I install in a HP-UX 11.0 model L2000.

It looks like the A4929A (1000 Base-T) is what you need.

You can also install one of the most recent gigabit ethernet cards, A6825A or A6847A on L2000 (rp54xx).

As mentioned, the 4926 and 4929 were certainly supported on that hardware. Not sure if they are still available from HP or not.

You should try to install the card in the fastest PCI slot you have on the system - my memory is quite dimm on the L's but I think that means one of the first four slots from the top, which will be labled something like "twin turbo"

Even then though, the A4926/A4929 were not always capable of link-rate. At least not at a 1500 byte MTU. They had rather high DMA setup latencies which affected their ability to get link rate with the smaller MTU or when packets were contained in multiple buffers. This also limits their maximum PPS rates.

Still, they would probably be a decent match for a system with 440 MHz CPUs.

The later GbE NICs are much better with regard to DMA setup latencies. As someone implies, they may be supported on the L2000, but I don't recall myself. I also do not recall if they have HP-UX 11.0 drivers or if they were 11.11 and later only. If the later NICs are supported they include a feature called "large send" or "TSO" that has the NIC offload outbound segmentation (TCP) from the host which can increase bulk throughput when the sender is close to being CPU saturated.

All of them support Jumbo Frames, but that requires switch support. Large send/TSO does not.

If you look at the HP-UX 11.0 install and update guide, available at http://docs.hp.com/en/5990-6721/index.html ,
in chapter 2 (Under "cold installing" and then "Selecting Mass Storage and network drivers"), at http://docs.hp.com/en/5990-6721/ch02s03.html , it lists A6825A (100Base-T) and A6847A (1000-Base-SX) as available PCI Gigabit Ethernet drivers for that release 11.0.
