Memory Upgrade on a RP4440 - 8

Currently, we have a 2GB DDR Memory quad in addition to a 4GB DDR memory quad.

We wanted to upgrade to 3 8GB quads.

I took the cover off our RP4440 and the memory slots are fairly accessible and swap out seems straight forward.

Are there any configuration changes? Or is it similiar to most other hardware where you pop the new memory in and assuming it's compatible everything comes up sensing the new memory.

I've never swapped memory on an RP4440 and was curious of what to expect.

If it is too crazy, may get HP in to do it.. Any feedback is much appreciated!

Hey Solo!!

You are correct. It's pretty straight forward to upgrade memory. Just remember to install in order, (Oa, 0b, 0c, 0d, 1a, 1b, etc.)

HP-UX will see more memory and away you go. You should review your swap space once it's booted up, and adjust as necessary.

I am not at all certain that 8GB DIMMs were ever certified for the rp4440. At least the quickspecs which remain online only go as far as mentioning 4GB DIMMs.

Whether the firmware actually checks/cares I cannot recall.

Just wanted to let everyone know this went great.

Full system backup, ignite tape. Shut down system with halt.

Removed front cover and then metal plate to get physical access to memory which took less than a minute.

We then removed all old memory and blank inserts - then inserted 4 8 GB DDR Memory Quads. Part number was A7131A (of which we purchased 4).

Booted system backup with a cold restart, done!

At this point I'll simply trot-out my old standby description of "works" vs "supported" in HPSpeak:

Supported, known to work -> warm fuzzies all around
Supported, not known to not work -> an HPite may be in trouble
Supported, known to not work -> an HPite is in trouble
Unsupported, known to work -> lucky today, unlucky tomorrow?
Unsupported, not known to not work -> there but for the grace of Turing
Unsupported, known to not work -> no, it was not deliberate ;-)
