Memory accross 2 carriers

if I were to split my memory dimms accross 2 carriers as opposed to having all on one would I see a noticible performance increase

The memory bandwidth on the N4000 is 2.1GB/sec per memory carrier, so with 4 memory carriers, you would get 8.4GB/sec.

The L-class is 2.15GB/memory carrier.

It also depends on how many CPUs you have in your system. The L and N class used CPUs that only had about 2.1GB/sec of bandwidth each. The on-chip CPU cache helps but my opinion is that in those systems you would want at least a memory carrier for each pair of CPUs. Beyond that I'm not sure that you would get a big return, but I/O also consumes memory bandwidth, so it depends. Unfortunately, there is no tool to show you time lost due to insufficient bandwidth to memory. Naturally, if you are I/O bound or network bound, then adding carriers doesn't help.
