Re: N-Class aborting boot

Damned, all that seemed necessary was this PDC update.
I now started the booting from my L-Class clone Ignite tape, and up until now it is installing to disks and extracting the archive without complaints.
But let's wait until the installation is finished.
I will be having a lunch break now and come back later...

Re: N-Class aborting boot

Grief, my content was premature.
It once again couldn't make a kernel and gave me a shell escape to fix or place a matching kernel in /stand/vmunix.

These are the installer's final words when it aborted:

WARNING: Command "/sbin/ioinit -f /tmp/ioinint.in" failed
Instance number assignments for devices of class "pbc" may not be assigned correctly.
...
WARNING: No such device, tunable, or cdio pbc.
Ignoring the following line.
pbc

cpp: /usr/include/sys/types.h line 391: error 4036: Can't open include file machine/vmtypes.h
cpp: /usr/include/sys/types.h line 529: error 4036: Can't open include file .unsupp/sys/_types.h

Error exit code 1
Stop
Config: make did an exit(1)

ERROR: Could not make an executable kernel...

Now where would I get the missing *types.h header files,
or where a suitable kernel (maybe from the core install CD?)

Is it worthwhile continuing with Ignite, or should I try an installation from CD?

Re: N-Class aborting boot

Ralph,

did you set the "cloning to diff HW" to true in the itools menu advanced options section?

Re: N-Class aborting boot

Shit, I can't even boot from the core install CD.
After having entered at BHC:

bo 0/0/1/0.1.0
...
Interact with IPL?> n

Booting...
Failed to initialize.

ENTRY_INIT
Status = -7

What follows is a several lines long hex dump.
After that I am again sent to BHC.

Now my last hope is to "tear off" all I/O pci cards as Michael suggested, and try again.
But I doubt this will make much difference...

Re: N-Class aborting boot

Hi Bernhard,

at BHC I again gave the boot path to the tape drive to check for your remark because I wasn't sure.
It took some tabbing through the menus until I found it in the Basic folder.
The Cloning to different HW was set to TRUE when I entered this submenu.
So yes, I guess it must have been enabled at my last try as well.
But I can retry the tape install...

Re: N-Class aborting boot

Finally, I tried as Michael suggested,
and removed all pci cards.
I then tried again to boot from my Ignite tape assuming that the installer wouldn't care about now unneeded drivers.
But the install again only went as far as where the make of the kernel failed.
I then replugged all pci cards, and found out about another N-Class with 11.11 that a colleague administers.
I there attached my external DDS4 streamer and ran make_tape_recovery from this box.
At the moment I am installing from this tape.
In the Basic folder where I had a look at the Additional menu I discovered that the installer automatically set clone to diff HW to FALSE.
I am now hoping that the kernel will build and get installed.

Re: N-Class aborting boot

I just want to give you a resume of the final outcome.
Finally, only direct cloning from N-Class to N-Class worked.
I have no RAM problem, the most recent PDC firmware (thanks to my for the cloning sake futile flashing), and all i/o cards are operable.
So I spent two days of screwing, plugging, flashing etc. in vain trying to achieve what only seemed to be an hour's task.
My essence, an L-Class does *not* clone to an N-Class via Ignite, at least with my given hardware constellation, contrary to widespread opinion.
