N4000/RP7400

We have many N4000's. However, I purchased a second hand server. Looks like a different class N. It is a C chasis, rp7400. I know the difference is that I can use the 750 or 875 CPU's. Question, is the bus speed of an rp7400, faster that an N4000? Or did they just change the name?

Robert -- They gone through and standardized the names over the past couple of years and this was one of the changes.

There were also some changes to the system board, so the name changed and the part number then ended in a C, while the N-class had part number ended in A orginally (360 and440MHz) and then B with the (550MHz) support. The internal memory and I/O speeds are the basically the same. The turbo-runway bus coming out of the processor chip was basically the same for the pa-8500, pa-8600, pa-8700 and pa8700+ processors. The pa-8800 uses the Itanium 2 bus which is 3X faster, but the N-class, rp7400 compensated by using having a memory contoller that could support more bandwidth to memory and two processor-I/O buses, each with 2X the turbo-runway bus capacity. However, to get this maximum bandwith memory had to be in all four memory carriers. So for maximum N-class performance make sure all memory carriers are configured and populated. The new rp7420-16 has two cells each with two Itanium 2 buses for two pa-8800, so each cell (up to 8 CPU cores per cell) has significantly more processor and memory bandwidth than the N-class. The greater bandwidth needs are one of the reasons why a redesign of the N-class (rp7400) was needed to go to the cell based technology that is used in the pa-8800 based Superdome, rp7420-16, and rp8620-32.
