Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

I have an HP 9000/800 G40 and don't know anything about it's identity such as IP address etc; I do know that it was working when we took it out of service.

I've read that a laptop or pc connected to the parallel port can be used to gain access to the existing OS. Is this a true statement?

I so the,

1. There are 4 d-shell connectors on the backplane so which one is the console output?

2. What terminal emulation software should I use?

Thanks

Re: Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

Hi,

No, you cannot use the parallel port to gain access to the system.

You can use any terminal emulation software, set to 9600 Baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.

Re: Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

My HP9000 has a SCSI/Printer/APMUX16 board installed model A1703-60022 with 3 ports ( scsi, parallel, and high pinout d-shell port labeled "to ADP/DDP". )

Is the ADP/DDP connector for console output?

Re: Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

The ADP/DDP port is for a MUX Cable, and you would connect the console to port '0'. If you don't have a cable for it, you will have to get one to use a console with the system.

And looking in the box of spare parts I see that I DON NOT have any cables that match the APMUX16 pinout..

What actually plugs into the APMUX16 port.

Any suggestions on a source for the MUX cable..

Re: Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

What other connectors are on the Core I/O?

You should have a SCSI, a Network, and A console or MUX at least.

How many pins are on each connector? (if the MUX connector has 3 rows of pins, its 62-pin, if it has 4 rows, it's 78 pin.)

Re: Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

The MUX port has 4 rows. I've attached a photo of the back. The three cards on the left are 2 parallel and 1 network. The card on the right is the combo card with SCSI, Parallel, and MUX..

Re: Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

Here's the cable you need ( I think...)

http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/showphoto?partnumber=5062-3074

Go here:
http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main
type in the part number (5062-3052)

this will bring up a window where you can type in a quantity and select purchase items (or similar) follow the dialogues, and you can buy one ($33)

Re: Newbie Question - Connecting a PC to console

Just one thing, though,

I am not completely sure that that is the correct part. I don't advise purchasing it unless someone confirms that this is the part number you need.
