No Telnetting to N-class LAN Console possible

Hi,

I several times configured the LAN console from within the GSP's sub comnand interface invoked by LC.

I'm dead sure to have assigned propper IP, NM, GW etc., and I several times double checked to have LAN access per telnet enabled (i.e. EL).

LS shows that the LAN console settings were taken correctly.

Even resetting of the GSP by hitting R in the XD sub command interface didn't help.

Whenever I trie to telnet to the LAN console from a host within the same LAN the connection is immediately closed, after displaying that I got connected and revealing the escape character.

What could I have been missing, what else could I try?

Is this a case for vendor support,
i.e. should I file a HW case?

What does LS (lan status) say?? Did you check EL??
EL : Enable/disable LAN console access

The EL command is used to set access permissions for users logging into the
GSP over the LAN. It does not affect the IP configuration or the ability of
the CSP command to connect over the LAN. It also does not affect the
ability of the GSP to perform upgrades over the LAN (XU).

I tried something similar with a web console last year. In the end, I filed a software case, because I was convinced the hardware was okay.

My connection was console to Web Console, the Web Console had its own LAN addresss.

What it came down to was the terminal I was using was disrupting the connection. Software also told me that that configuration was not supported.

The irritating thing about it was that in February of 2004 I visited the HP performance center and they were doing exactly what you were trying to do without trouble. They were allowed to use the Putty connection software. I was not permitted to use that in my shop.

If you can try Putty, it is flexible enough and might allow you to succeed.

Can you ping the console IP from the telnet client?

Is the Remote LED green on the server??

Do you have a System Name when you enter the GSP from the console???

As SEP suggested, it just might be terminal emulation issue!!

vt100 is normally the best emulation!

i am agree with Suraj,
if you are able to ping than check your Term
emulation and also trying to connect with
"Putty" sounds good.

Hello all,

yes, on a ping to the LAN Console's IP I receive echos for each packet sent.
As I wrote, when I telnet I already receive the server's connected confirmation together with the notification of escape char sequence, right before it kicks me out immediately.
Btw, I always set my telnet client's term emulation to VT100, because I know that the LAN Console usually rejects other settings.
As for the LED's light status next to the RJ45 socket on the back of the chassis I cannot tell right now what colour it shows.
To check this I would have to change buildings several blocks apart (that's of course the main motivation for making use of LAN consoles ;-)
As soon as my duties lead me there I will check the LED.
From what I've heard about PUTTY this far,
it seems to be a client for Win32 systems.
Actually I have to connect from an AIX server which acts as our central Unix admin server within the Admin LAN for our LAN/Web Console access.

Hi Ralph,

Can you enter in the GSP from the console, type "SO", enter "N" at the "Do you want to modify the GSP wide parameters? (Y/[N])" question and post the results?

Hi

First your go to the server console and try to make a telnet from the server to the same server.

you can be clear wheather it is a s/w r h/w problem.

if it works then try it from a nearer node to the server.

use netstat -an command and try to know wheather any other process is using the same port or some firewall is on.


check for the default router settings.
