STM currently shows:
Memory Board Inventory
DIMM Slot Size (MB)
--------- ---------
0a 512
2a 512
1a 512
3a 512
0b 512
2b 512
1b 512
3b 512
--------- ---------
System Total (MB): 4096
Does this indicate a single carrier with 8 DIMMS ?
If so, what would the display look like with two carriers ? Like this ?
Memory Board Inventory
Extender
Slot Num Configured and Slot label for each DIMM (MB)
-------- --------------------------------------------
0a 2a 1a 3a 3b 1b 2b 0b
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
EXT 0 1024 512 1024 512 512 1024 512 1024
EXT 1 1024 512 1024 512 512 1024 512 1024
------------------------------------------------------
System Total (MB): 12288

SolutionEach letter is a separate carrier. So you indeed have two carriers & they're both fully populated. You'd need to swap out the 512MB DIMMs for 1024MB DIMMs to increase memory at this point.

Re: Number of mem carriers without opening server
DIMM Slot Size (MB)
--------- ---------
0a 512
2a 512
1a 512
3a 512
0b 512
2b 512
1b 512
3b 512
--------- ---------
System Total (MB): 4096
0a, 2a, 1a,and 3a are one carrier
0b, 2b, 1b, and 3b are another carrier
for a total of two carriers.
Just re-verbalizing to make sure I understood the statement.
Thanks !

Re: Number of mem carriers without opening server
I could in essance purchase 4 more 2048MB modules( 2x1024 ) to reach 12Gb total.
( or obviously, replace all 512MB DIMMS with 1024MB DIMMS and add 8 more 1024MB DIMS to reach system max of 16GB)
Right ?

Re: Number of mem carriers without opening server
Nope - sorry.
DIMMs are purchased in pairs all right, BUT the pair *adds* up to the value. 512MB DIMMs are in fact 512 X 4 bit plus ECC bits , so that it takes 2 DIMMs to make up the 512MB address space. Again that STM output shows a fully populated 2 carrier system. Only option is to purchase DIMMs with higher capacities & replace the 512 DIMMs with them. You can get up to 2048MB DIMMs for a total of 16GB.

Jeff

Re: Number of mem carriers without opening server
L-class - will look like:
Basic Memory Description
Module Type: MEMORY
Total Configured Memory : 6144 MB
Page Size: 4096 Bytes
Memory interleaving is supported on this machine and is ON.
Memory Board Inventory
DIMM Slot Size (MB)
--------- ---------
0a 512
2a 512
4a 512
1a 512
3a 512
5a 512
0b 512
2b 512
4b 512
1b 512
3b 512
5b 512
--------- ---------
System Total (MB): 6144
The L-class can go up to 7a/b for a total of 8GB max.
The N-class on the other hand will look like:
Basic Memory Description
Module Type: MEMORY
Total Configured Memory : 16384 MB
Page Size: 4096 Bytes
Memory interleaving is supported on this machine and is ON.
Memory Board Inventory
Extender
Slot Num Configured and Slot label for each DIMM (MB)
-------- --------------------------------------------
0a 2a 1a 3a 3b 1b 2b 0b
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
EXT 0 1024 0 1024 0 0 1024 0 1024
EXT 1 1024 0 1024 0 0 1024 0 1024
EXT 2 1024 0 1024 0 0 1024 0 1024
EXT 3 1024 0 1024 0 0 1024 0 1024
------------------------------------------------------
System Total (MB): 16384
So you can see that an N can have up to four carriers & a total of 32GB memory if they are all maxxed out with 1024MB DIMM pairs.
SO I guess you can say that an L has only one carrier - the system board itself. Whereas an N-class has "true" memory carriers & can have 4 total.
I hope I didn't confuse you too much & have cleared this up.

Jeff
