PA-RISC processor interchangeable

Is it possible to place a PA8600 from a N4000 (rp7400) into a L2000 (RP5450)?

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

It probably depends on the system board being the same. If the L2000 already has PA8600(s) in it, then the answer would be yes.

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

Hi,

It probably depends on who you talk to.
I suspect HP would say no because I believe they charge more for an N-class processor.
But as Pete points out, it can be done provided rev levels match. I've seen posts in the past where it was done successfully.

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

I don't think you can do that.

the specifications on the rp5450 are PA8700

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

Hi Steven,

The *new* rp54xx line has PA8700, but the earlier systems - definiteley when they were still called L & N class - were PA8600.
That's why we qualified the responses with the board info.

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

In my (outdated) reference, the rp5450 can be ordered with PA8600 processors at $6500/each. There are also several notes: "Processor frequencies should not be mixed", "PA8699 550MHz CPU runs at 540MHz in rp5450", and "hp server rp5450 Carrier Grad Enterprise system (Z7535B) does not support 540MHz".

Interestingly enough, as Jeff pointed out, the exact same CPU for a rp7400 goes for $13000/each!

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

I have 550 MHz rp5450 CPU's I should have checked.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict HP will say no.

Unless it really is the same CPU.

Guess I'm just off today.

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

The N-class/rp7400 CPUs are not interchangable with the L-class/rp54xx CPUs. I've personally tried this before, and it doesn't work.

Sorry - "PA8600", not "PA8699"!

Re: PA-RISC processor interchangeable

I suspect Josh is right on this (especially since he tried it). The two cpu's show entirely different product numbers: A6146A for the rp5450, and A5866A for the rp7400. This could either be smoke and mirrors or truly different CPUs - I'm now leaning toward the conclusion that they're different.
