PIM Dump

PIM Dump

Hi, an N-class box at one of our remote sites had an HPMC and they got a PIM Dump. I found ITRC document GCENKBRC00012594 which presents a *decoded* PIM dump, but there was no information on how the decoding is done. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Barry.

Hi Barry,

Check this doc.

Document description: How do I use q4 to pre-process a dump that HP needs to read
Document id: OZBEKBRC00000611

Thanks for the reply, but there are a few problems:

1) The tiny link doesn't work; it expands to a huge link that contains an "admit" string which doesn't give me proper access; and my usual ITRC id and password didn't work at that site for some reason. But I did use the document id you cited to find the document.

2) The document deals with reading an HP-UX memory dump using Q4; I asked about a *PIM* dump, which is a very different thing. (FYI, PIM means "Processor Internal Memory", and a PIM dump usually occurs with an HPMC, as far as I'm aware)

3) The document does say, in part (under step 6.1):
The OnlineDiag software bundle captures HPMC chassis codes in
/var/tombstones/ts* files. If available, email the 'ts' file
created after the "dumptime" listed in the dump INDEX file
(eg. ts99).

That 'ts' file that I'm supposed to email to HP is the very PIM Dump I'd like to read. I'm just trying to learn how to read it without HP's assistance or intervention.

4) This one is my fault, I failed to mention it in my original posting: The N-Class box which experienced the HPMC and produced a PIM dump is an MPE system, not an HP-UX system. So Q4 and the other HP-UX tools do not apply.

Thanks anyway,
Barry.

Thanks. In one of those threads I found someone who appeared to be from HP stating that the HPMC decoder utilities are not available outside of HP, and likely will not be made available in the future. I guess that's the ultimate answer to my question: I can't read a PIM Dump without HP's assistance.

Barry.
