Question concerning HP 700/96 console monitor

We have 2 RP5450 (L2000) HP9000 Servers that are rack mounted. Due to limited space, we really don't have room for the console monitor's that go with them. We would like to find a rack mountable monitor that works as a HP-UX console monitor. We don't want a monitor that works as a terminal emulator and we don't need one that is windows based. We just need one that will work as a HP-UX console monitor, but be able to be rack mount it.

Does anyone have any idea if there is one out there?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Question concerning HP 700/96 console monitor

Do you have room for a wheeled cart that you can roll around?

We have 25 HP9000 machines and 1 console. We have it on cart that we can roll around and just attach it to whatever machine needs it. It's much easier than having 25 consoles scattered around.

Re: Question concerning HP 700/96 console monitor

Hi,

Why do you want to go for a console monitor Hardware, when so many options are available to manage the console sitting at any where in the server room or in console room.

All that you need to do is, attach and configure the GSP or MP LAN or install web consoles.

Because our mission requires us to continue to have a console with each system.

If you are determined to use a 700/96 then you should be able to able to find a keyboard/monitor shelf and use it in conjunction with an A/B switch to connect to either L-box.

Here is one idea:

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Question concerning HP 700/96 console monitor

It doesn't have to be a 700/96 (that's what we are using now). I'm trying to find out if there is a flat panel monitor that will work the same as a 700/96 (console monitor).

Re: Question concerning HP 700/96 console monitor

It's a very common problem with an easy solution: a serial console concentor. Almost all computer rooms have many, many console connections that are not actually used (but should be). Not only your rp machines but routers, firewalls, email filters, etc, all need a serial console in case of LAN failure. Concentrators have both a LAn as well as a serial connection so you select the box you want to talk to from the terminal keyboard, and you're connected. Sort of an electronic AB(CDEFG....Z) switch.

The other advantage is that the actual serial console is available renotely if necessary, a requirement in case you need to reboot the server (or network gear). But unlike the GSP LAN console interface, you have alternate connection methods (serial, modem, etc). Manufacturers (a sampling) are: Avocent, Cyclades, Digi International, Lantronix, Logical Solutions, MRV Communications and
Raritan Computer. Many of these companies have KVM switches but that's not what you want.

As far as a flat screen, rack-mountable terminal, about the only HP solution is a "thin client" which is basically a small box that you plug in a monitor, keyboard and mouse. However, it's not clear that these are anything more than a dumb PC running Windows or Linux.
