RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Hi Experts,

I attached HP DDS4 tape drive C5687C to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card on RP4440. Now rp4440 won't boot up. What do I do now?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the tape drive first and make sure that the system will boot.

2nd, check the SCSI ID of the tape drive. If it is 0 or 1, change it to something else (other than 0, 1 or 7) and try again.

How do I change the SCSI ID of the external tape drive?

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

There should be switches on the back of the drive that allow you to set the SCSI ID.

At what point does the boot fail?

Does it get to the point where it asks "Press any key within 10 seconds...."? If so, press a key.

When you get to the MP prompt, type 'sea ipl' to look for boot devices.

If it doesn't get to that point, please let us know exactly where it is failing and the message(s) you see.

I plugged in channel B inside the rp4440 box, then connected channel B outside plug the the tape drive. Rebooted the server and failed. Then I unplugged channel B inside and outside, still won't reboot. Even I don't get MP prompt.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

When I came back to the office this morning. The server is back to normal, except the flashing red light in the front. I will try to set the external tape drive SCSI ID and connect again to see what will happen.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Wait a moment - if both internal disks are on separate scsi channels you MUST NOT connect an external tape drive or any external device there.

ioscan -fn

can show us what you have ...

Hope this helps!

Hi Peter

Patrick is right you use a SCSI ID that as a conflict with your server.

Change the SCSI ID in the bake of the tape to 3, you shouldn't have any problem.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Inside the rp4440, SCSI channel A cable is plug in, but channel B cable is NOT. Initially, I attached external tape drive to channel B from outside without attaching internal cable to channel B. rp4440 could not identify tape drive. Then I attached internal cable to channel B from inside the server and attached tape drive to external channel B. That was when the server could not reboot yesterday.

What are my next steps?
