Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Hi Peter

After you attach the tape you need to run a ioscan -fun to detect new hardware.

Then do insf -e to install special files.

Then you do a ioscan -funC tape to see if your tape is already reconized.

Reply if you need directions.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Hi Nightwich,

I did ioscan -funC tape, did not return anything.

From my previous message, my question is: Should I plug the inside cable to channel B (it wasn't plug in initially)and plug the outside channel B to the tape drive?

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Don't remove the internal cables. There is a terminator at the end of the cable, which is needed.

Your disks are in "simplex" configuration, so you can use the external connector B.

Did you use a terminator at the tape drive side?

Check for bent pins too.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Hi Peter,

Paste the output of the following commands:

kcmodule -a | grep -i tape

ioscan -funC tape

Also you need to have a scsi terminator on the tape.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Torsten,

Tape drive does have a terminator. I will insert the internal B channel cable, and try again.

Nightwich,

# kcmodule -a | grep -i tape
sh: kcmodule: not found.
#
# ioscan -funC tape
#
OS is:
HP-UX rp4440 B.11.11 U 9000/800 637230314 unlimited-user license

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

One more piece of info:

I set tape drive SCSI id to 7

No, no, no. You cannot use 7. That is the ID of the SCSI controller card itself. Use another ID.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Hi peter.

kcmodule if for 11.23 and 11.31

to 11.11 you should use:

# kmadmin -k | grep -i tape
tape2_included
tape2
stape

This should be the output.

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Patrick,

I will change scsi id to 5 and try again. The big question is: Should I plug in the internal cable B to the internal channel B? Which was un-plug in before I started the external backup tape "project".

Re: RP4440 tape drive attached to SCSI Channel B LVD/SE card

Have a look at this manual:

http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01883140/c01883140.pdf

Particularly you need to read the section "Converting SCSI From Simplex to Duplex" starting on page 66.

If you are NOT converting, and thus not installing the parts they talk about (meaning you still have the short jumper cable they talk about), then my guess is that you DO NOT want to plug in teh channel B cable.
