RP7420 boot problem

We have rather odd issue on our RP7420. All was working well until I stopped the server. No trying to boot the primary boot device, brings up an error "IODC ENTRY_INIT failed. Error Status: -5".
I have checked the fabric, and the primary boot fibre card logs into the switch. Nothing has changed on the fabric. If I do a "sea all", I can see all the bootable I/O devices, but the hardware path does not show as a physical boot path, which makes me suspect that the device may be corrupt. Our boot disks boot of an MSa1000 with a mirrored pair.

Re: RP7420 boot problem

hi Paul;
here there are some troubleshooting steps;
check them step by step;

Troubleshooting Steps:

. Power off the server, then power off the disks - leave all powered
off for at least 30 seconds. Power on disks, then server.

. When server is booting, check access LED's on boot disk, is it being
accessed? Yes - possible bad disk. No - possible bad path to
disk, e.g.. Cabling/termination/adapter. Time to log hardware call.

. If boot disk is in an external disk enclosure, check the cabling is
secure, and access/status lights are normal.

. Attempt to boot from an alternate boot path if you have one,
e.g.. Mirror boot disk, alternate boot disk.

. Double check you have the correct boot path.

. Use the SEArch option at the Boot Menu, does the primary boot path
appear? If not, we cannot see the disk and time to log a hardware call.
If we can see the boot disk, but still get ENTRY_INIT error when booting
we need to log a hardware call.

. We can boot to Recovery Shell and use the chroot option to fsck the
boot disk, but this will always fail if we cannot get to the ISL
prompt of a disk; in most occurrences of this error using the Recovery
Shell (Support Media) is not helpful.

. Perform preliminary steps to reinstall the system; As in most cases this
error means the boot disk is bad and will need to be replaced. If the
system is not mirrored then the recommended recovery method is to
reinstall the system.

ENTRY_INIT Status : -5 means ;

Unrecoverable data error.
ENTRY_INIT encountered an error while transferring data to/from the target controller or device

Re: RP7420 boot problem

It is a bit awkward powering off the MSA, as it will affect many servers. However I did do the power on/off on the server. To no avail. I checked the fibre cable, and that apeears ok, but it could be probablematic. I checked the MSA, and it registers the device as being online. SEA ALL does not show the hardware path as being a bootable object.
One thing I did try was a "boot lan INSTALL" to see if it would see the discs, and it did. Does not make sense then as to why I can't boot from it. Probable corruption?

Re: RP7420 boot problem

An update on this problem. I have tried booting from the other available boot disks on this server (its is configured as a vpar), and no luck either. The switch was rebooted, and that did not help. It all points to the MSA1000 being the problem. Which is odd, as there other server currently using the MSA.

Re: RP7420 boot problem

This issue has finally been resolved. Turned out that the fabric hardware path address had changed. Possibly due to our fabric intergration exercise.
