SCSI TAPE: dev = 0xcd000040 I/O error during close

upgraded the external tape drive on
an rp2430 unix system from a DDS3 24 gb
(c1537a) to a DDS4 40 gb (c5638a).
Used a DDS3 tape to do a backup and
it was successful, however we cannot
read the tape and are getting the above error
in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log and when
doing dmesg. Are we only suppose to
use DDS4 tapes for backups to work properly?

You'ld better install the latest SCSI patches on your server. Is it running Hpux 11.00 or hpux11i

The tapes created with DDS3 should work on DDS4, but not in the reverse way. Couple of things to remember:

1) Check your tape drivers (stape, tape, tape2) and see if you 've loaded the right ones. If not add it through SAM. Check with ioscan -fnkC tape command. Both drives may need different drivers.

2) Check the firmware revision of the tape drive and make sure it's updated.

3) Check SCSI and tape patches and install latest ones.
