Re: Serial Numbers

Geno,

Seriously, there is no internal serial number on a G-class server. I have over 60 G's and H's, with the same issue. If the serial number has been filed off, then the only option is to ask HP if they have record of it. Some times they can "hunt it down" by using disk serial numbers and other internal hardware components.

Re: Serial Numbers

Dont match among what ?

MAC Address could be overwrite by rc.config.d/*ether* files.

Search these file and see this:

#####################################################################
# @(#) hpetherconf $Revision: 1.3.119.1 $ $Date: 96/10/01 12:11:39 $
# hpetherconf : contains configuration values for HP IEEE 802.3/Ether
# interfaces
#
# HP_ETHER_INTERFACE_NAME Name of interface (lan0, lan1...)
# HP_ETHER_STATION_ADDRESS Station address of interface
# configured through lanadmin(1m)
#
# The interface name, major number, card instance and nmid may be
# obtained from the lanscan(1m) command.
#
# The station address is set through the lanadmin(1m) command.
#
#####################################################################

###########################################################################
# The HP_ETHER_INIT_ARGS are reserved by HP. They are NOT user changable.

HP_ETHER_INIT_ARGS="HP_ETHER_STATION_ADDRESS"

# End of hpetherconf configuration file
#HP_ETHER_INTERFACE_NAME[0]=lan0
#HP_ETHER_STATION_ADDRESS[0]=0x080009AFBDF5

Re: Serial Numbers

Carlos,

Geno is talking about the actual serial number of the physical box (found on the back side on the right), not the system id.

Mac addresses can be changed, as well as the lan card or personality card, but unless some chisled the serial number off the back, it should still be there. The system serial number would have to be intentionally removed. At one time I had over 200 G-class servers, and none of them had the mac address as the system id. Fortunately I'm down to about 60 G's, which are due to be obsoleted soon (yea!!!)

Re: Serial Numbers

Hi Harry:

I said AS serial not said IS.... :-).

As ever by experience, i Know that system-id is at least in any portion calculated using hard-hard-mac_adress of lan0. Although it colud be change on PDC too.

So , what i mean, is :

1- All systems have lan0
2- All eth card have a unique mac adress ( not absolute true)
3- You can use mac adress AS ID or AS s/n of your box.
