Server comparison with a K580

I'm looking on the used server market for a set of development stations that are at least one generation newer that the K580. And a system that will perform better than the K580. Does anyone have a reference that would give me some guidance?

Re: Server comparison with a K580

Hi Stuart,

try to find model N4000 (rp7400) with 360, 440 or 550 MHz CPUs.
You can also consider the smaller model L2000 (rp5450) with 360, 440 or 540 MHz CPUs.

Re: Server comparison with a K580

Timeline wise the L2000 would probably be your best bet. It only holds 4 CPU's, but the PA-8500 and 8600 chips are faster than the K580's PA-8200 chip. I think the bus is a bit more stable as well.

You could also consider a J7000 workstation which also holds 4 8500 440mhz CPU's.

Both systems hold 4 internal hotswap disks and use PCI slots for IO.

You could check benchmarks to see the differences as I am not sure there.

Re: Server comparison with a K580

My experience is limited with hardware but I'm going to put my vote in for the L2000. We went from a couple of K580s to a couple of L2000s and they work like a charm. Easy to use, a great improvement (although the K580s really were workhorses), and much less expensive when it comes to maintenance. Although there's not much left that can be put under maintenance on the K580s.

Not sure what kind of development you are doing, but just to give you a point of reference: Each L2000 is running a half dozen Oracle instances including Financials and they barely put a dent in it.

Re: Server comparison with a K580

Hi Stuart, if your looking for the biggest bang for your buck in the used market that is steps above the K580, I would suggest a J5000. It's dual 440MHz PA-RISC 8500 and you can pick a nicely configured one for about 1k. All of the add-on internal disk, memory, and I/O cards are a lot cheaper than the K, N, L, and RP stuff.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the input and comparisons. Is there a URL that would show performance differences?
