Sharing 1 Tape Drive for 2 servers

Hi everybody!
I've got the following configuration:

2 RP3440 server, each of them in a HP Rack System/E, 33U. In one rack there is a HP Tape Array 5300 with one HP DAT 40 Array Module. Another RP3440 has got no Tape Drive (dat 40).
I plan to share 1 tape drive between to servers, the easiest way is to unplug the cable from one server, and to plug it to another one.

Will it be a proper solution if I connect 2 servers to 1 Tape Drive simultaneously? In this case i guess the SCSCI buses of the servers will be connected and it may cause some mulfunctions in case one of the servers will go down. Am I right?

Re: Sharing 1 Tape Drive for 2 servers

Hi Andrew,

This works fine, this is supported in an MC/Serviceguard environment.

Just mofify one of the SCSI ID of your cards to six, so that you don't have a duplicate SCSI ID, the command is mptconfig to do this.

So you have a chain
card : ID7
tape : ID3 (ie)
card : ID6

Good Luck

Please note that both servers will not be able to write to the drive at the same time.

Luk,

I didn't find mtpconfig command, could you explain some details about it?
