Shutdown and power off an rp4440 from GSP/MP

I have a rp4440 whith MP-FW: E.02.29, BMC-FW:02.37 and System-FW:44.21.
I want to halt and power off this server using MP. There is a command "PC - Remote Power Control" that has -graceful option. The HELP show :"GRACEFUL SHUTDOWN - BMC send a signal to the OS to shutdown prior to turning off system power", but I've tried it and the shutdown and power off don't begin.

Are there somebody that have check that option?
Do I need to upgrade the firmware?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jose,

That *should* work.
But be advised that it only shuts down the power to the "main" cabinet.
The MP will continue to function.
This is normal. To halt the MP you have to pull the power cables.
Can you still ping the host?

Re: Shutdown and power off an rp4440 from GSP/MP

Hi

I worked with HP recently to get the firmware upgraded on a RP8420 & Rp7420 servers, what I did was shutdown the OS instance (shutdown -h command) and once the server went down from the HP engineer took over by powering off & then on and upgrade the firmware. I would think the best would be to talk to the HP engineer to find out what is the best way to go about.

Re: Shutdown and power off an rp4440 from GSP/MP

Thanks, but when I execute "pc -graceful" in the MP->CM, I can connect to the server with telnet and the server status doesn't change:

[contingencia] MP:CM> pc -graceful
PC -graceful
System will be gracefully shutdown.
Confirm? (Y/[N]): Y
Y
-> System has been requested graceful shutdown.
-> Command successful.
[contingencia] MP:CM>

MP MAIN MENU:

CO: Console
VFP: Virtual Front Panel
CM: Command Menu
CL: Console Log
SL: Show Event Logs
HE: Main Help Menu
X: Exit Connection

[contingencia] MP> vfp
LEDs | LOCATOR | SYSTEM | POWER
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
| OFF | ON GREEN | ON GREEN
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Status | System running normally.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm waiting and the server status is the same.

Re: Shutdown and power off an rp4440 from GSP/MP

Hi (again) Jose,

Well then yes - I'd say it's a FW problem IF the syslog nor shutdownlog shows no attempt to shutdown.
Did you get any console output showing that the system was even *starting* a shutdown event?

Re: Shutdown and power off an rp4440 from GSP/MP

No, the /etc/shutdownlog and the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log and the console don't show shutdown event.
I'll upgrade the FW and try again.

Thanks.

Re: Shutdown and power off an rp4440 from GSP/MP

Hi,

Graceful Shutdown through MP -> pc -g is not supported on HP 9000 systems. Hence it won't work on rp4440. The PC "-g" option has been removed (as a fix) in iLO MP version E.03.13 so it won't appeared on 9000 systems. It is mentioned in the following link.
It is better to keep the firmware on the system to latest level.

http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?BC=patch.breadcrumb.main|patch.breadcrumb.search|&patchid=PHSS_33088&context=firmware:osinit

The graceful shutdown through MP ( pc -g )is supported on HP Integrity servers.
