UPS configuration with hp power manager

Hello folks,

this is going to get confusing, I even don't know if this is the correct forum to ask...

I am supposed to configure a UPS R3000XR (A1356A) on a RP4440 or RP3440.

The major problem is, i don't know the UPS and the customer doesn't know the product. I know the RP-Servers and have a fair knowledge of HP-UX11. The customer has a 4440 and a 3440 and told me he connected his ups to each of the UPS ports on the management cards of the respective servers. As the site is hundreds of kilometers away i can't just drop by and proof everything myself. I only have to rely on everything I can find out remote or call the customer and tell him what cables to plug or unplug.

If I configure SAM->Periph.->UPS on the 4440 I get a ok in syslog that a ups is configured correctly on one of the ports. (I first configured all serial ports, then uncofigured every port that threw errors in the syslog, which left over one serial port. /usr/lbin/ups_mond: UPS /dev/tty0p0 OK;)
If I configure SAM->UPS on the 3440 it doesn't matter which port i take, syslog allways wines about no UPS connected when ups_mon is restarted.(/usr/lbin/ups_mond: UPS /dev/tty1p4 read of status failed)

Now, the customer doesn't want to use ups_mon and SAM but DevMan (HPPM). I downloaded and installed HPPM-4.2, uncofigured everything in SAM, killed ups_mon and dm_ups and ran /sbin/init.d/DevMan setup.

No I get the following:
root # /sbin/init.d/DevMan setup

The RP3440 again can't find anything on its serial ports. (I wonder what the customer plugged in there...)

Re: UPS configuration with hp power manager

It should look like this for the rp3440:

So I think the cabeling is not correct. Ask what connector on the server was used.

IIRC there are special serial cables required - one sit eis fixed to the UPS, other side is supposed to be connected to the server.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: UPS configuration with hp power manager

Check /etc/inittab if ups_mond is still configured!

Hope this helps!

Re: UPS configuration with hp power manager

i commented out the ups_mon line in inittab and there is no ups_mond process running so i guess it is stopped.

Re: UPS configuration with hp power manager

What do you expect by opening another thread now?

Did you check the cables already?
The correct cable must be connected to the UPS connector of the server.

Hope this helps!

Re: UPS configuration with hp power manager

I hope that in another forum i get another audience with experience on my problem.

I let the customer check the cabling. And I get the same error on both machienes when the cabl is plugged in.

Re: UPS configuration with hp power manager

IMHO whoever watch this forum is using this URL, so it doesn't really matter:

http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/familyhome.do?familyId=122

The most suspect until now is IMHO still the cable.

Hope this helps!
