Updating firmware on rp8420 from 3.0 to 4.0

Hi

we are trying to upgrade the firmware on the rp8420 from 3.0 to 4.0 and would like to know if anybody encountered any known issues with 4.0? or if you recommend going to 3.3 since 4.0 is been out for almost 6 months?

Thanks

Re: Updating firmware on rp8420 from 3.0 to 4.0

Hi,

more than 6 month is a long time for any computer related thing.
There is a list of known and already fixed issues in the release notes of the current version. Read the notes very carefully!
You will notice this:
"The procedure described in this section is consistent with updating an rp8420 or rp7420 server from version 3.3 to 4.0"
You have to read the RNs for 3.3 too!

In case of any doubt contact your HP support.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Updating firmware on rp8420 from 3.0 to 4.0

Version 4 is GOOD firmware.

As previously mentioned, you MUST read the release notes for the upgrade procedure.
Heed the warnings as to when you should and shouldn't power off the cell(s)/machine.
Also note the references to upgrading the FPGA PDHC before doing the PDHC FW.
By not following the notes you may end up with the symptoms of a "dead cell(s)".
This is recoverable, but read the notes/heed the warnings fully BEFORE you begin to do the upgrade to avoid these sitiuations.

Re: Updating firmware on rp8420 from 3.0 to 4.0

Before the upgrade, it might be worth capturing the outputs from the MP of:
MP>CM>CP
MP>CM>ID
MP>CM>LS

and from the BCH menu's:

PA (boot path info)

Just in case you loose your complex profile info and need to recover.

Re: Updating firmware on rp8420 from 3.0 to 4.0

before starting any upgrade we ran sysrev and noticed that PCI-X Backplane LPM is showing a rev of 7.000 instead of 2.000 - any ideas?

PCI-X Backplane : LPM HS
------- -------
7.000 1.000

Thanks
