SolutionA6147B opt. 001 will get you the rp5470 which can go up to 875MHz CPUs, but also supports the 550s. List $2465 remarketed, or $2900 new.
Replacing the Backplane is not a task for someone who wants to be sure of keeping their job.
BTW,
the L1000 to L2000 upgrade is a simple change. no board-swap is necessary, but it must be done by an HP CE.

Re: Upgrade from L1000 to L2000
1) Processors, Memoryboard, IO board, System board will be replaced...except HDDS/DVD/CD etc.
2) Pls keep all IO cards in similar slots after upgradation
3) PATH of console may change. Pls check it also. IT depends on your GSP version
4) all path of io cards will get changed after replacement of IO cards. SO pls run IOSCAN script before upgradation . It will change your old hardware path to new path automatically
5) before this exercise pls export all your vgs so that it can be restored by vgimport. Pls remember to do vgimport in maintenance mode only.
6) At last it may happen that system will not boot at all in maintenance mode( hpux -lm). PLs boot just by giving huux at ISL , shutdown the system and again reboot in maintenance mode.
