Upgrade of HP 9000/800/L1000-36

I have a HP-UX test server. We would like to do an system upgrade. I only have for internal disk. What would be the best equipment to attach on my server so I can avail a new hard disk.I mean I would like to an external disk attached on my server via scsi. Can I also add 2 cpu's on that kind of server?

Hi Allan,

If I've read your question correctly I assume that you want to know what kind of disk arrays you can attach to an L1000? Do you already own some disk arrays that you're considering attaching or would you need to buy one? If you're looking to attach the array using SCSI you will obviously need to have a SCSI card in the server. Generally SCSI disk arrays use HVD interfaces so you will need to check if you have a HVD card installed.

In regards to the number of CPU's, an L-class can take up to a maximum of 4 CPU's.
If you already have an OS installed on the server you can see how many CPU's you have installed by using the top command. Alternatively you can see the number of CPU's when you boot the machine or you can use the GSP commands.
Your model L1000-36 indicates that your CPU's are running at 360Mhz. If you have want to add more CPU's they must be the same speed, or if you want to upgrade to faster CPU's you will need to replace your existing ones.

L1000 did support multiple cpu's if I remember correctly.

Depending on the size of the internal disk, you should be able to either run update-ux or do a cold operating system install of HP-UX, which I recommend to have more reliability and a cleaner install.

You will then need to get a current quarterly patch set installed on th machine.

Just a slight correction, the L1000 only supported 2 processors. You would have to upgrade the system to at least an L2000 to support more than that. You could upgrade from 360mhz to 440mhz processors.

I believe you said that you have four (4) internal disks. That is the maximum number for the internal disks. But you may be able to upgrade them to a greater capacity, the maximum size is 36gb per disk as I recall.

The built-in Guardian Service Processor contained a LAN/SCSI card that provides 4) SCSI busses (2 for internal HotPlug disks, 1 for embedded removable media and 1 for external devices). If you look at the PCI card cage (back side of the server), you will see that the bottom slot has a VHDCI connector for SCSI. That is an Ultra2 LVD SCSI connector, 80MB/s. You could use that if you don't have anything else connected to it. Just make sure that whatever you connect up to it is LVD (Low Voltage Differential) or SE (Single Ended) and not HVD (High Voltage Differential).
