Urgent Help: A500 boot failed after upgraded firmware to 43.50

Hi,

My A500 has following configurations:
A500-A5570B with 2x440M CPUs, 1024M ram, run HP-UNIX 11.0

Before upgraded firmware, the attention LED is always blowing with old 40.90 firmware version. So, I decided to upgrade the latest firmware. I downloaded the patch PHSS_31925 from itrc.hp.com and applied the system. After finished to install this patch, the system rebooted and failed.

The warning message is 'The system contains an incompatible mix of processors'. The fault LED is ON consitantly.

I am sure th DIP setting has not been changed.

The message does not indicate that the DIP switch settings have changed but they may not be set right.

The firmware upgrade might have contained a new check for processor compatibility, so that is why you might be seeing the messages after the upgrade.

You need to have the CPUs and dip switches checked out.

Thanks. I double checked DIP switchs setting. Since CPUs are 440M, current DIP is 100010 where 1 means UP or ON.

Can firmware 43.50 support 440M or not? How can I solve this critical problem?

Hi,

do you still get a prompt after the warning ?
I'm aware that something like this once happened with the older firmware 42.19 after deconfiguring CPUs. There, a "rs" entered on the GSP prompt helped that the system came to BCH and could boot the kernel.
If you are not able to boot to BCH, then you have to call the HP support, maybe the system board or one of the CPUs are bad.
If you can boot to BCH, please try
- get to BCH information menue. Make information to all hardware and attach it
Some tries to fix the problem:
- try the "de" command in BCH service or configuration menue
- try deconfiguration/reconfiguration of one CPU via the BCH Service Menue.

did you try the GSP reset ('rs') that Stefan suggested?

Yes. I did GPS 'rs' already and it still boot failed.

Also I did 'de' in BCH configuration menu.
Already tried deconfig/reconfig CPUs in BCH menu.

The error keeps same. boot failed.

When I used old firmware 40.90 before upgraded, the system works well except the attention LED was blowing. The system can normally boot and login. There were 2 CPUs working when I ran unix command 'top'.

Now the new firmware of 43.50 can not boot successfully at all.

Did you try the "de" command in BCH configuration menue ? Reset the server with "reset" after this.
If this does not help,
Please try deconfiguring CPU 1 with the CPU command in BCH configuration menue. I wonder if you can boot HPUX after that.
If this does not help, try deconfiguring the other CPU (reconfigure CPU 1 before this).
Keep in mind that a reset is needed to make the configuration change become performed after each CPU command.
please report if this has helped.
What kind of error message do you get when you try booting HPUX ?
