What does the character code "^N"'s mean?

Hello all;
One of my customer had done "ls -l" command on the "/" directory. After that, resalt list of the "ls -l" had been turned to strange charactoer, which looked like a bar code.
I had faund the reason,why it was happend.
If there is the file name,which has special charactoer code like a "^N" of the biggining.
In that customer's case,
"#ls -l |more"
-rw-rw-rw- root sys ******** ^NP^NDep
I think the file was made by someone,accidentally. But I don't undestand how to make it?

The problem had been disappered after the file was erased.

Do someone know what "^N" is?

Regards;
Katsu

Hi,

^N is Nothing! :-)
I am joking.....it just is a dirty character. I think that it just was a mistake of user when you created that file. Maybe that user has not good settings about his/her terminal and editor. When he/she types something he/she gets dirty characters on terminal. Just a thought.
Anyway don't worry, it is not a system problem.

Re: What does the character code "^N"'s mean?

Katsu,
This could be the problem where a user accidently hit a series of keys which created the file.

I can create a file with ^N in the name by doing the following:
# vi *****[control-N]P[control-N]Dep
:wq!

OR
# echo >*****[control-N]P[control-N]Dep

# ls -l |more
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 1 Mar 29 10:38 *****^NP^Ndep

So it is possible to do this from command line.

Maybe their fingers were shifted on the keyboard and they meant to hit Shift instead of the Control key.
