What's difference between A6114A and A6115A memory?
We're looking for memory for
our 9000. We know it can
take A6114A memory (1 GB DIMM),
but HP PartSurfer says
that A6114A and A6115A are
both 1 GB products (the same
size). The A6114A is listed
as working on many 9000s
(including rp2430 and
rp5430), but the A6115A is
listed on working on fewer
900s (e.g., rp5430 but not rp2430).
If they both work on an rp5430, shouldn't they both
work on an rp2430?
Assuming HP PartSurfer's
whacko prices are even
halfway accurate ... when
you can even coax it to
display them :( ...
why should there be such
a large difference?
thanks,

Re: What's difference between A6114A and A6115A memory?
The rp2430 can only utilize 1024MB memory modules. This is made up of (2)512MB DIMMS. The product number according to the July 2002 configuration/price guide is A5841A. Further, it only supports a maximum of 2GB total system memory utilizing (1) Very low latency memory controller.
The rp5430 can utilize 2GB memory modules. This is made up of (2)1024MB DIMMS. The product number according to the July 2002 configuration/price guide is A6115A. The 1GB memory module is made up of (2) 512MB DIMMS. It's associated product number is A5798A. The rp5430 utilizes a different memory carrier with it's own 2.15GB/s bus. It can support two of these for maximum performance.
The A6114A product number is listed for the rp2450 and rp2470 ONLY. It is listed as a 2GB memory module consisting of (2) 1024MB DIMMS. Since this is larger than the maximum module supported under the rp2430 guidlines (1024MB)or (2) x 512MB DIMMS, I would assume that Part Surfer has some incorrect information.
The A6115A 2GB memory module shows as being supported on the rp5430 and rp5470 ONLY. Again I would reference the use of a different memory bus and carrier.
From your message, I'm assuming you have an rp2430. That being said, the following are the supported modules for your SPU;
A5572A 128MB SyncDRAM module (uses 1 DIMM slot)
A5840A 512MB SyncDRAM module (uses 2 DIMM slots)
A5841A 1024MB SyncDRAM module (uses 2 DIMM slots)
HTH,
Dave

I'd assign points if
the ITRC software would
take the trouble of
giving me a link to do that!

Re: What's difference between A6114A and A6115A memory?
The "rp24xx Hardware Manual"
(carefully printed without
a date or version number :)
implies that all rp24xx
models can use 2GB "modules"
(pair of 1 GB DIMMs)
There's clearly no
hardware limitation that
would prevent this from
running ... and no
reasonable software
limitation (providing
we don't exceed the
2 GB max)
Hmm...guess we'll just
have to try it :)
thanks,
Stan

Re: What's difference between A6114A and A6115A memory?
(two 1 GB DIMMs made
by Kingston, part # KTH-LSVR/2048, for about $500 (including
FedEx)).
Installed it today, in
slots 0 and 4.
It works!
(We had had a single 128 MB DIMM :)
Major performance difference! When I re-compile
our HourGlass product, the
times dropped from 42 elapsed
seconds down to 18 elapsed
seconds. (CPU times stayed the same.)

Re: What's difference between A6114A and A6115A memory?
Thanks for the follow up. I'm glad to hear that the enhancement provided the needed performance gain. Here's a link to the "assignment process". According to this document, you should see an assign points button next to each answer.

Dave
