X Windows Background

It seems as though my desktop looks like corrugated metal when I start X windows. Is there a configuration step I missed? I can open a term window and SAM just fine it is just the back ground. I went through the Xf86.0.log and it seems as though that it is in order. Where should I look? Thanks again
