/dev/fcms2 when connected to fabric shows driver state dead but if I connect to JBOD its working fine(detect the disks & driver state shows ready)

Hi,

What model server is this & what is the model number of the FC card?

If this is a D/R/K class & the card is a 3404 well then the problem would be that the card is not switched fabric capable - only link-loop.
That would match your symptoms 100%.

For those systems you'd need the A6685A card which is an HSC bus FC card that is switched fabric capable.

Thanks JEff, the machine is R class(9000/800/R390), the fc card - not sure about the model, pl let me know how can I check the fc card model( without opening the machine).

I don't know if this works for your card, but try

fcmsutil /dev/ vpd

or run the STM info tool on it.

Well, I don't know for sure (we don't have any more of them) if the model number is printed on the outward facing bracket of the 3404 card - but it *is* on the 6685. So check card from the outside of the server.

Out of curiosity I poked around the datacenters & found an old K that's on it's way to decommissionville & it had A3404As in it & they are indeed labeled on the outer bracket as such. So just poke your head into the back of the rack & you'll have your answer.

Jeff may be on the right track here. I had issues with a fibre card in a V-class that did not support the fibre setup I needed it to.

Use fcmsutil test

fcmsutil device_file test remote-N-Port-ID

To get n port id

fcmsutil /dev/td? devstat all | more

to get a /dev/td use ioscan

ioscan -funC fc

I checked partsurfer & although I can't definitively tell you that 3591 is *not* switched fabric capable I can tell you that when it resolves down to the "actual" device it comes out as 3395. Now with that part # being lower than 3404 I would bet $ to donuts that it is not switched fabric capable.
So I think a 6685 card is what you really need - period.
I'll also tell you that *every* EMC, Hitachi or HP XP quote I've ever seen has stated that the *only* HSC FC card they support is the 6685 so you better get a quote on 'em if you're really going switched fabric.
