different size disks in vg

Is there a rule of thumb against creating a vg with different size disks? The vg I'm looking at creating will have 8.8 GB and 34 GB disks.

Re: different size disks in vg

Hi,

you can have ifferent disk sizes in a VG, but if you want to stripe or mirror, you are limited to the smallest disk.

Hope this helps!

Re: different size disks in vg

The main "gotcha" is adding a larger to disk to an existing VG. Unless you increased the pe size and/or max_pe's when the VG was created, you will not be able to use all of the larger disk. As long as you created the VG with enounh PE's then it is not a problem to mix and match disk sizes within a VG. In fact, it's rather common. When mirroring, I do always try to make sure that the corresponding mirror extents for a given LVOL are taken from matching corresponding disk size.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
