Gents,

L3000 server, forgot the service processor password.

How can we reset without rebooting the machine. Machine is working with a Critical Database.

You need to have ascii terminal or laptop with terminal emulation s/w connected to GSP local console port. Then follow one of the 2 methods given below.
1. From unix, issue "stty +resetGSP . On the system console (ascii terminal connected to local console port), a brief message appears to enter "p" to reset the GSP passwords. This message lasts for about 10 secs. Use "stty +queryGSP to display the status of the GSP.

2. Push the reset button on the GSP. On L-class, the reset button is hard to get to; so its recommended to use the stty command instead. Must take off the side panel to get to the GSP reset button. After the reset button is pressed, a brief message appears on the local console to enter "p" to reset the GSP passwords.

Note: The "p" message to reset passwords happens only when the local console is an ascii terminal. I.E. an external SWC does not work.

None of the above methods is distructive.

The L-class servers can have either revision A or revision B GSPs. I assume yours is revision B, because revision A does not have integrated Web Console functionality.

This procedure should work with all revision B GSP's and also revision A's with current firmware. Revision A GSP's with an old firmware will need a different procedure.

You need physical access to the server, because the password reset procedure requires you to be able to access the local console port. You also need to be able to login to the server (maybe through the network) and enter commands as root.

Procedure:
1.) connect a terminal (or a PC with a terminal emulator) to the server's console port. Depending on the security settings of the GSP, you might even be able to login to the server locally without the GSP password; if so, you can use it for the next step instead of network login. But the important point is just to ensure that the terminal connection works.

2.) Login to the server (any way you can) and become root. Enter this command to reset the GSP:
stty +resetGSP
3.) The GSP's reset cycle will take a few seconds. During that time, the GSP indicator lights at the back panel of the server will change - this is normal. Watch the terminal connected to the GSP: at the end of the reset cycle, the GSP will output a line containing its firmware version and a copyright message. After that, it will display a prompt like "press 'p' now to reset GSP passwords". The time window for this is not very long, so do it immediately when you see the prompt.

4.) You should now be able to press Ctrl-B to access the GSP prompt. The default user/password should be Admin/Admin, if you need it.
Now use the GSP commands to set new passwords.


If you cannot access the server as root, you'll need to be able to remove the server's PCI cardcage cover, which usually means pulling the server out of rack while the server is running - be very careful if you need to do this.
The GSP is the card in the 2nd slot (counting from the bottom). On the GSP card, near the edge and pointing towards the edge there are two buttons. One of them is labeled "TOC". It will crash the server - don't press it!
The other is labeled "GSP RESET". It will have the same effect as the step 2 in the procedure above.
