hp9000 e35 and IBM 3151 terminal
I am an AIX Systems Engineer who just
receivedc a hp9000 e35 workstation. I'm
trying to attach and IBM 3151 termimal to
the system on serial port 0, but I get nothing
on the screen.
The terminal works fine on the RS/6000 next
to the HP workstation.
I'm guessing I'm having terminal setup
issues, but I have no idea what the
terminal needs to be set to, 9600,n,8,1???
Also, is the tty0 the proper port for an
HPUX console?
I plan to use the workstation to learn HPUX.
Thanks for any help on a new user question.

Re: hp9000 e35 and IBM 3151 terminal
a) Make sure that there is getty process running on the port - /etc/inittab
b) Are you using a MUX? If yes, then connect to the port-0 (/dev/ttyp0),that's the console
c) One way about terminal configuration is trial and error. Check emulation as "hp" and 9600, n, 8,1. You can also check the details on the stty output or gettydefs file.

Re: hp9000 e35 and IBM 3151 terminal
Secondly your E35 is not a workstation but a series 800 server.
Thirdly the parameters 9600,n,8,1 should work for you. You can use vt100 emulation cos I do not think your IBM terminal support HP emulation.
Check if the getty process is ok in /etc/inittab.
Lastly I think you need a special cable which comes with HP terminals cos the wiring on the MUX is not standard RS232. The HP part number is 40242-60024.
What I suggest is to try and hook a laptop with a serial cable to the MUX and like this you try another possibility.
Good luck
Stefan

Re: hp9000 e35 and IBM 3151 terminal
I admit I havn't done it in HP-UX but in Linux I addes the line
T1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L ttyS0 1200 vt100
to /etc/inittab I think that the IBM is either 9600 baud or 1200 baud.
hope I was of some help
