modem & RP7410

I am trying to hook up a multi-tech 56k external modem to our RP7410, running 11.i and having no luck. I am able to add the modem to the machine in sam, but when I try and communicate with it, nothing happens. How do verify what port the modem is on? and how can I communicate with the modem to make sure that it is working?

What software are you using on the modem? Kermit?
