Where did you get the cable? Are you sure it has the proper pin-out? I can only speak from from my limited experience at a previous couple of employers trying to connect modems to rp servers, but cables were the primary cause of failure. Often times the modem would answer, but not display anything from the GSP/MP. Sounds very similar to your problem trying to connect directly from the laptop. These cables were typically ones that were just grabbed at random off a shelf or out of a drawer by someone. Swapping the cable with one purchased from HP fixed the problem every time. The annoying thing about serial cables is that there is no standard beyond the shape of the connectors.
