rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

I have an rp2450 running HP-UX 11i that will not boot since we have configured a lun on the A6795A fiber card.

It would boot just fine until we configured a lun on our san and mounted it. Now it gets to the realocating PDC and just hangs. At that time if we pull the fiber cable out of the card it will continue to boot normally.

Do I have the configuration wrong or am I missing some patches?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

Check if you have the latest firmware on this server.

If you search for boot devices in ISL do you see the fiber card LUNs as possible boot devices? This would mean the card and LUNS are OK.

When you pull the cable and the server boots normally, is everything normal with the I/O card? (ioscan, fcmsutil)?

If you plug the fiber cable back in do you see the LUNs and arethey usable?

Any problems in the above steps would indicate something wrong with the card and LUNs. Possibly needing fiber/SCSI/LVM patches.

On another thought how much time have you given the server in the "relocating PDC" stage? 20 minutes to half hour is not unusual with these servers.

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

So the A6795A runs with both PA-Risc and Ia64 arch. And for Ia64 you want these drivers:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=311422&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=311420&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=7

If you can't connect, and that happens a lot lately with HP, then here is the product's URL:

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

hi tim,

This could be just down to the PDC firmware level.

The latest version is 43.50 and adds proper support for the A6795A card.

Check what version you have installed either in hpux or at BCH and update if needed.

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

Shalom Tim,

Since the card is certified, its either the driver or firmware or both.

Having your system at a normal patch level, a recent bi-annual update and looking for I/O hang patches is also a very good idea in any event.

I've run into system crashes after months of normal operations. They were traced back to fiber issues in the crash dumps.

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

Thanks for every ones responses! Unfortunately my boss sent me off to New Jersey for two weeks and I am just now getting back to this problem.

There is something that I forgot to mention in my initial post. The system booted just fine with the card installed and the fibre cable attached until we created a lun on the SAN and mounted it. Don't know if this helps any but it seemed kind of wierd.

How do I find out what my PDC firmware revision is? .

Thanks again for all your help!

Tim

P.S. I will issue points when I get a chance.

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

Ok,

So I did some looking through past forums and found out how to check the PDC revision. I am currently at 43.50 so this should be good. My GSP revision is A.01.12, not sure if that is good enough.

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

hi,

well your PDC and GSP are both fine for revision level then A.01.12 is the latest gsp version for your system

next I would check if you have either of these 3 patches installed

http://www12.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?patchid=PHKL_34161&sel={hpux:11.11,}&BC=main|search|

http://www12.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?patchid=PHKL_36571&sel={hpux:11.11,}&BC=main|search|

http://www12.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?patchid=PHSS_31326&sel={hpux:11.11,}&BC=main|search|

more specifically the PHKL_36571 patch

Re: rp2450 hangs on A6795A fiber card

I loaded the PHKL_36571 patch the PHSS_31236 patch would not load because of a dependency of PHKL_23626 whic was superseeded by the PHKL_36571 patch.

Needless to say the system will still not boot as long as the fiber cable is connected. The minute I disconnect the cable it will boot.

I did try to do a "fcmsutil reset" to see if I could reset the card with out rebooting and I recieved the error "FCP driver not loaded" I checked the kernel drivers and it said that it was loaded?

Is it possible to make the boot not look at that fiber card?

Thanks,
Tim

Did you try installing these patches one at a time and it failed?
You need to swcopy both to another depot and install them all at once.
