I've got a K-class server with the following hardware spec.
No of Processors: 3
CPU Version: 2.0 PA8200
Clock Frequency: 200 MHz
Hardware Model: 9000/898/K370
Physical Memory: 2G

and i am offered a spare rp2450 server for a DR purposes for K-class production box with the following spec
No of Processors: 2
CPU version : PA8600
Clock: 550 MHZ
Physical Memory: 2GB

I just wanted to get some comparison between k and rp2450(A-class) and would it be worth getting a rp2450 as a DR and the life of both servers.

Any suggestion ?

Hi Steve,

The rp2450 is a far superior machine than the K370. Besides, its default mode of operation is 64-bit instead of K370's 32-bit. Combine this with the superior clock frequency of the rp2450 and you'll have your production machines flying (at least compared with you do have today).

You haven't said what you're running in your K370; I would use the rp to replace it and would leave the K370 as the DR server solution. This is good because you'll make your users happier, as everybody likes more performance from any server. ;-)

If you're going this way, just check that it won't be a nightmare to use the 64-bit environment; Oracle databases are particulary touchy about this. Also, verify that your systems aren't bound by the version of the OS running in the K370 nowadays.

I've checked on different threads they say,
K-class (PA8x00) support either 32- or 64-bit. Based on that i assume my current K-class supports both 64 bit OS and oracle.

You're right, the K370 will support either 32 or 64 bit up through 11i:

This actually works in your favor. If you're going to use one of these servers for DR, it would be best if they were both capable of the same platform. This way you can take an Ignite backup ( http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/index.html ) of your production server (presumably the rp2450) and load directly onto your DR server, restore your data and go!

You will probably find the rp2450 server can run circles around the K370.

An interesting plan would be to eventually migrate production to the A Class box and use the K370 as a DR server. The problem will be the K box getting hard to keep on service contract.

It is quite nice that the K box can run 32 bit or 64 bit, that makes it quite useful.
