rp5450 / won't start up

I've had an rp5450 boxed up for some time. It was intended as a spare parts server, and I have never tried to power it up, although the vendor said I should be able to.

I've got two power cables connected (PS0 and PS1). There are two small fans in the front of the cabinet, also labeled PS0 and PS1. PS2 has no fan installed in the front. There is a single green blinking light.

I've got a working VT220 connected to the "console" dongle, and I can get into the GSP using Ctrl-B.

At the prompt I type: PC and I get this message:

Cannot turn system ON because power switch is OFF

There's no faceplate on this box at the moment. When I press the power button briefly, the fans all kick on - they run for 6 seconds maybe, then shut down again.

Holding the power button in, the fans run up, then slow down - they stay on as long as I'm holding the button. Let go, and they power off.

While holding the power on, if I then type the PC command, it says:

System power ON, power switch ON
Would you like to turn off power?

I answer no.

Still, when I let go of the button, it shuts down again.

Is it because I have the faceplate removed that I am having this trouble, or is the power switch possibly bad, or is there another possibility?

Many thanks,

Fred

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

There are not only fans at the front - these are the power supplies.

The front cover isn't a problem, just use a screwdriver or pen to switch on or off.

Anything from "PS" command while system is on?

Any related logs in GSP logs?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

A bit more info; both front fans have steady green power. There is a single 18GB disk in A0, which gets a brief green light if I hold the power on. There are a couple of interfaces on the back in the top slots, empty at the moment. No network cable, yet.

Server is not racked yet; sitting on a desk, temporarily.

While holding the power button on, there is an amber flashing light, it's the Attention light.

I can get into SL alright, there are errors there about the system name being unitialized, etc. and this:

SOURCE: 6 = platform
SOURCE DETAIL: 3 = cabinet fan SOURCE ID: 4
PROBLEM DETAIL: 5 = functioning

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

Actually in total it says:

SOURCE: 6 = platform
SOURCE DETAIL: 3 = cabinet fan SOURCE ID: 7
PROBLEM DETAIL: 5 = functioning

CALLER ACTIVITY: 4 = monitor STATUS: F
CALLER SUBACTIVITY: 05 = fan
REPORTING ENTITY TYPE: 2 = power monitor REPORTING ENTITY ID: 00

This is repeated several times in SL.

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

All the fans (1 in front, 1 rear, 4 at the right side) are N+1; so if 2 are failed the system will not power on.

Check them - any amber LEDs on or not (while power is on)?

Hope this helps!

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

All six of the fans physically run, as long as I have the power button held in. There is one large fan in the front; a large one in the back; and a front and rear fan for the two power supplies.

Can anyone tell me if the power button should physically 'click' when pressed on/ pressed off? This one does not.

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

Can't tell you if it does a click, it was always too loud around...

Press the button and perform a "PS", press it again and repeat the "PS".

Does it show "Power Switch: ON"???

GSP> ps

PS

Power Monitor Status:
Firmware Revision : A
System Power state: Off Power Switch : Off
Temperature : Normal Selected fan state: Normal

Power supplies | Fan
# State Type | States
-----------------------------------------------------------
0 Normal Type 0 | Normal
1 Normal Type 0 | Normal
2 Not Installed - | Normal
3 - - | Normal
4 - - | Normal
5 - - | Normal
6 - - | Normal
7 - - | Normal

Hope this helps!

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

The two small fans in front are both green; in the front otherwise, it's just the amber blinking attention light when the power button is held in.

Actually I just noticed that the Run light blinks green when the button is held in long enough.

At the rear, the two NIC interfaces...the one with the console dongle has a green light. The other has a green and amber, but there's nothing connected to it.

While looking at this, I discovered that if I hold the button in long enough, it seems to start to post - I see processor tests, etc, scrolling by on the console.

Is this beginning to look like a simple bad power switch?

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

PS says power switch ON, only while I'm holding it in. Otherwise, OFF.

Re: rp5450 / won't start up

So most likely the switch is just bad.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
