rp7400 OS Upgrade

We are running on rp7400 with HP-UX 11.00.
Soon we will upgrade to rp7410. Is it a good idea to do a Ignite backup on old rp7400 and restore it on a rp7410 (because of the app configuration )?The question is strictly related to the OS version: does rp7410 supports HP-UX 11.00? New rp7410's are coming with preinstalled HP-UX 11.11! What will I loose when installing HP-UX 11.00 on rp7410? HW compatibility?

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

hi,

no guarantees but you have a pretty high chance in successfully recovering an rp7400 image on a rp7410.

HP-UX 11.00 has been discontinued since 31-Mar-04, and will be obsoleted on 31-Dec-06.
So if you still want/need support you'll have to upgrade before that date anyway.

Thierry.

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

Thierry,
1. After restoring the Ignite on rp7410 there should be a procedure for upgrading the HP-UX 11.00 to HP-UX 11.11i ?!?
2. What is the obvious difference between HP-UX 11 and HP-UX 11.11? HW support? Mem management? nPars support? What will I loose if I put HP-UX 11.00 on machine such as rp7410 (obvious/noticable things)?
3. Is HP-UX 11.00 supported OS on rp7410? I think that I read somewhere that HP is not supporting the HP-UX 11.00 on this machines!

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

HP-UX 11.0 is not supported on the rp7410. One of the new features of HP-UX 11i is that it supports hardware partitioning.

I would say that it probably will not work to ignite the hpux 11.00 image to the rp7410.

Also, if you have 875MHz CPUs in the rp7410, hp-ux 11i is required for any CPUs above 750MHz. this is true on the rp54xx platform as well.

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

What about the number of processors? I think that the rp7410 has 8 processors. rp7400 has 4 CPU's but I think that HP-UX 11.00 supports up to 8 CPU's.
What about memmory management? I think that HP-UX 11.11 has better memory management (supports up to 800MB of buffer cache for example which HP-UX 11.00 manages pourly!). Can you confirm this?
Our current OS is well patched - latest HW drivers and so - so why do you think that simple ignite restoration will not do the trick?

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

HP-UX 11.00 is not compatible with the rp7410. That is why the ignite will not work.

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

Hi,

The rp7410 does run hpux 11.00. But HP only supports hpux 11i on the rp7410.

The rp7400 and rp7410 have different architecture, for example the rp7410 is cell based, the other is not, ....
But as they are both N-classes I would still try the Ignite restore and then upgrade to 11i.

11i has many new features, see docs.hp.com or the release notes: OLAR, faster resizing of dynamic buffer cache, more dynamic kernel parameters (still not the one you change often but anyway), possibly better performance, ....

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

One of the new features in 11i is support for Cell-based systems (rp7410, rp8400, etc.) If you have more than one cell board, you will definitely not be able to use it when you are running 11.00.

Also, what CPUs will you use in the rp7410? 875MHz are not usable under HP-UX 11.00.

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

Were I you, I would start with a fresh, virgin install of hpux 11i and be rid of 11.0 completely. Migrate your applications separately. As others have pointed out, you can run 11.0 on the 7410, but its like putting socks on a rooster: why would you want to? You can do it, but the rooster won't like it and everyone will laugh at you.
You'll find the 7410/11i faster and nicer by all standards if you do so. 11.0 will not take advantage of the new cool features that the 7410 offers (like the crossbar switch). So take the plunge and do it so that it is maintainable in the long run.

Re: rp7400 OS Upgrade

The reason why we want to do it this way is the app config which are a lot and complicated.
If we can restore the Ignite image of rp7400/HP-UX 11.00 on the rp7410 and then UPGRADE to HP-UX 11i it would be fantastic! We will keep our config's - app links etc ... and at the sime time (after the resore) we will upgrade the OS to the HP-UX 11i.
Is this ok? Will this initial step (Ignite restoration) make some bugs in my system which will downgrade the overall availability and stay permanent in my system?
For sure I want to use ALL of the capabilities from new rp7410's!!!
I must mention that we are running MC/SG on these two rp7400 machines and VA as sharable storage between them.
