rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Ordered 8GB of A6097-60001 memory to fill up 2 cell boards on our 7410.

On boot getting MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM on cell 0, cell 1 gives no errors and now we have 12GB usable instead of the 16GB we expect.

According to CM, DF we now have a mixture of 2 memory part #'s in both cells, A3863-66501 (orig) and A6097-60001 (new).

I checked and the memory mix in both cells are in the same slots.

Any ideas?

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Brook,
How does the memory showup when you look at "mamory information" from the BCH ?
any warning from the information menu at the BCH ?

The memory comes in Quads so you have to make sure you do not mix.

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Ill have to bring the server down and check what the BCH info says, I plan to reseat the cards and make sure they are in quad pairs, although I am pretty sure that is the case already.

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Brook,
I might be wrong but In the FRU list that you have provided it seems that the 2nd Quad is in slots 2abcd insted of slots 1abcd.

loading sequence is
1st (0a 0b 0c 0d)
2st (1a 1b 1c 1d)
3st (2a 2b 2c 2d)
4st (3a 3b 3c 3d)

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Brook,

'MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM' means that you have memory that is not made for this system. In particular, you have A3863-66501 boards, which are workstation memory for the B & C class workstations.

8GB of A6097-60001 would be 16 cards. Is that what you ordered?

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Yes, we ordered the A6097A , which comes in (4) 512MB DIMMS, and we ordered 4 of these which gives 16 512 MB DIMMs. We put 8 DIMMS in each of the cells.

The original memory that came with the system is the A3863-66501 chips, so not sure if you are correct on saying they are for workstations.

I may just put all the memory of each type in each of the cell boards and try that.

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Brook,
If you are going to do that, make sure you look at the memory through the BCH information menu.
The system can deallocate memory if it is the wrong one or of a Dimm has problems it will deallocate/deconfigure the whole quad.

If you check at that level it will save you a few bootup and shutdowns.

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Those boards are definitely for workstations:

http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partinfo&template=main&cpric=&psrchmode=&partsrch=A3863-66501&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

Can you post the output of this command:
echo 'selclass qualifier memory;info;wait;infolog' | cstm
This will list which memory modules are detected by the system.

From the FRU listing you posted, it looks like you only have 6x A6097-60001 and 6x A3863-66501. Try to post the output again, the bottom part may have gotten cut off.

Thanks,
Josh

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Brook,
I have to agree with Josh, the memory does come up as workstation memory.
It might be a revlation that workstation memory can be used in high end servers ...LOL ;-)

Re: rp7410 MEM_NOT_SYSTEM_DIMM

Attached is the stm output, you will see that cell 0 has the missing memory.
