sending information via a long FWD SCSI Cable

I need to connect an HP DLT8000 (C6378A) to a HP L2000/RP5400 via a FWD cable. My problem is the DLT is 200 meters (656 ft.) away from the server. I don't believe that the signal will travel that far. Does anyone know of a signal amplifier or any other means the have information carry over that distance on a FWD cable??... bringing the devices closer together is not an option.

Any info would help

Re: sending information via a long FWD SCSI Cable

Jesse:

200Meters is a very long way away!

I have heard of SCSI repeaters (never used them) that can extend to 18Ft or so...

Can you create a network connection between the servers and use some software to backup the remote server?
Enjoy!

Re: sending information via a long FWD SCSI Cable

Hi,
I appreciate John's piece of advise of using remote backup sort of thing via network.

Also if that is not the option for your case pls try this link:
http://www.paralan.com/customprod.html

I think if you approach paralan they may make a custom device for you requirement if it's not available with them.

Perhaps a fibre-channel conncetion will be preferable?

Simon, how can I use the fibre-channel set up with a FWD DLT?

Re: sending information via a long FWD SCSI Cable

Thanks for the info guys, those repeaters are nifty little things but it looks like the maximum distance on those is 72 ft. Shailkh, I called Paralanand they can take me as far as 320 ft now but they are developing a method to take me the whole 656 ft and beyond, that solution should be ready in three months.

Simon, I actually figured out how I can get to the 200m using some HP FC Multiplexers.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: sending information via a long FWD SCSI Cable

Jesse,

There are SCSI to fibre Multiplexers:

A3308A(stand-alone), A3511A/AZ(Rackmountable)

you connect to the multiplexer via a Fibre HBA and fibre cable (up to 500m) and then you have 4 SCSI ports on the remote side of the multiplexer.

HTH!

Re: sending information via a long FWD SCSI Cable

Make sure that the FC to SCSI mux goes to FWD if the DLT is FWD (HVD). You also want to make sure that the configuration is supported by HP. Not every thing that is possible is supported.

Re: sending information via a long FWD SCSI Cable

Hi there.
If you want to go the way with the bridges from SCSI to FC and vicecersa, be very, very careful. Let them give you a certificate, that this will work. I know some people in Germany, who had real problems with that kind of configuration.
