serial printer connect to hpUX 11.11

Hello,
we have about six HP serial printers. they are connecting now to hp3000 thru a DTC.
we are in process of migrating from HP3000 to HP9000. i would like to have yous opinions regarding which method is better to use between the DTC (old school) and Nport product from MOXA and anything else?
The Nport converts serial to ip address.
if you know of any better method to connect serial printer to hpux 11.11 please let me know.

1. If you have parallel ports on the printers, external print servers will be required by which each printer can be configured as a netowrk printer.

2. If above option is not valid, Mux Card can ordered with hp9000 and printers can be connected on serial ports.

3. No idea on Nport product from MOXA

Unfortunately, these are remote printers.
the servers are in usa and printers are all around the world. So the Mux card may not be the solution, and the printers have only serial port. I am looking for some devices with ip address

Hi,
Connect those serial printers to a PC which has serial port and running Windows 2000 or above. Install unix printing service on Windows. configure the printer from hp-ux as remote printer using IP of the PC.

Note: The printer depend on the PC. If PC is off, printing is not possible.

I recently had a hand in networking a couple of telephone PBXs to a data collection server using Moxa Nport DE-211s. Clever little boxes, but not necessarily the cheapest around.

The default mode on the Nport boxes is designed for use with Moxa drivers on a MS-Windows computer: it will make the serial port(s) of the box look like local serial ports on the computer. No such driver available for HP-UX though, so you must examine your situation and find out which of the modes of the Nport box is the best to use in your situation.

We ended up using the "TCP Server" mode. The box will listen on a configurable port (default is 4001). The connection can be tested by telnetting to that port. The configuration menus are available by telnetting to the standard telnet port.

If you were to use a Nport box as a printer server for a serial printer, you could try setting the box to the "TCP Server" mode and port 9100. That way the box would work somewhat like an external HP JetDirect box, but it would have a serial connection to the printer instead of a parallel one.

The JetDirect administration tools would of course not work on a Nport, but with luck it might be possible to use the JetDirect printer installation procedure on HP-UX to set up a basic print queue through the Nport.
