I want to make my laptop as a consol for D class server. I have 9 pin Null modem cable which is fit in server serial port but I dont have serial port in my laptop. I tried one adapter USB to RS232 which not worked.system is working well with my desktop computer which has serial port.

Any body can help me to find out solution??

Re: using laptop as D class server consol

Shalom,

The simple way is to use a null modem cable and hyperterminal or procomm.

That would need to be connected to the D boxes console port.

Modern laptops don't have com ports so you'll need to spend $15 on a usb to comm converter device.

Knowing nothing about your USB-serial
adapter, it's hard to say why it didn't work.
(Did you try a straight-through cable instead
of a null-modem cable?) Obviously, if it
works with your desktop computer's serial
port, it should work with any other
computer's serial port.

Re: using laptop as D class server consol

salm,
I had the same problem with my toshiba laptop.
I bought the USB to 9pin cable, connected the null modem cable and the most importent thing as, when you use the hyperterminal, you have to pick the right port (COM??)

in order to find which one it is go to the device manager on windows, pick the ports branch and see which port is your usb convertor appears as.

it worked for me it shoud work for you

good luck

Re: using laptop as D class server consol

It is really common to have laptops with no serial ports at all. The serial-to-USB adapters do work *BUT* you must determine what COM port is being used. Some terminal software is simply incapable of handling anything except COM1-COM4 and your USB adapter is probably using COM5 or higher. Some USB adapters add the number of the USB port to COM4 so the 3rd USB port makes the adapter COM7. Refer to the serial adapter's instructions on how to figure out the COM port number. Contact the manufacturer or browse their web pages for detailed instructions. You may need a different terminal emulator if you can't configure the correct COM port in the program.
