Firmware upgrade on c7000
Hello,
I need to upgrade my c7000 OA firmware to support the new BL460c G7 servers.
As I understand, I must upgrade the blades iLO before the OA.
I want to do the upgrades without any downtime, is that possible ?
I know that I can upgrade the iLO online, but ROM upgrade need reboot, but do I really need to upgrade the blade ROM ? Maybe iLO is just enough ?
I've read the HP BladeSystem ProLiant Firmware Management Best Practices, but there is not enough information about no downtime minimal upgrade.
My current firmware's are quite old.

Re: Firmware upgrade on c7000
You will need to pass by intermediate versions before applying the 3.30 version, and before that you must upgrade BIOS, iLO and VC.
Here is the FW matrix of Blade Systems to respect:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/doc/p616879734/v69710/ReleaseSet_Compatibility_Table-9.30.1.pdf.
I hope that will help.

Re: Firmware upgrade on c7000
ou can start with updating all ILO's by using HP SUM on the firmware CD... There you can detect all ILO's behind a OA and update them all at the same time...
Afterwards you need to updates the ROM's of the blades itself, which requires indeed a reboot.
Do the updates via HP SUM, there is now intelligence build in that will warn you for possible dependencies of firmwares op specific components...
At the end update the OA and eventually VC modules...
Good luck!

Re: Firmware upgrade on c7000
HP SUM doesn't detect the iLO's behind the OA, maybe my OA version is to low for that.
Can I update only the iLO's and OA (I don't have VC)? It's very hard to plan a downtime for all the blades. I'll do the ROM updates sometime later.
As I understand you can only upgrade the ROM from the OS or Firmware DVD, there is no way to upgrade from iLO ?
Seyfeddine, could you please speficy about which intermediate versions you are talking about, I can't find anything like that in the document.

Re: Firmware upgrade on c7000
Which version of FW DVD are you using? I propose to use the latest 9.30 version since you have G7 blades...
When you launch SUM, at the top right there is a button Host Search which allows you (for instance) to detect ILO's behind an OA...
You can update the ROM of the server via the OS or via the FW DVD. This FW DVD can be connected to the blade via the ILO virtual media option or via a USB key plugged in the OA module... Inside the ILO console itself you can't update...
