HP BL465 Blades: ILOs frequently loosing IP address

Hello everyone,

we're running 8 C7000's filled with HP ProLiant BL460c  and BL465c blades.

About 14 days ago, we re-designed the network to become 10G and outfitted all C7000's with Flex-10 modules.

Doing this, we updated all enclosure firmware and blade firmware using the latest SPP.

Everything is fine with the Flex-10 modules and we are happily running virtual connect domains of 4 enclosures each.

But:

Since the last 14 days, ILOs frequently loose their IP address and thus, become inaccessible.

We didn't change anything with regards to the IP addressing for the ILOs or OA's and also changed nothing regarding DNS.

So it seems that this may be either related to the flex-10 modules which replaced the old GbE2c Layer 2/3 Blade switches or to the ILO firmware (most recent version).

Here's an example about one blade which lost it's IP recently (pls.see attached pics):

ProLiant BL460c G6

Part-No: 507864-B21

ROM-Version: I24 01/22/2015

ILO IP address assigned via EBIPA via the OA.

Symptoms:
Login to OA-Webpage, select device bay 7, click at "ILO".

Now I try to open the ILO page via clicking one of the offered options:
- Web Administration
- Integrated Remote Console
- Integrated Remote Console Fullscreen
- Remote Console

Result:

A new tab opens in the browser (regardless which browser, tried several) and I see this error message:

This page can't be displayed
- Make sure the web address https://0.0.0.0 is correct
- Look for the page with your search engine
- Refresh the page in a few minutes

When I ping the ILO's IP address at the same time, it replies to the pings.

So the browser where I try to open the ILO page from the link in the OA tells me I'm trying to open https://0.0.0.0 while a ping to the EBIPA-assigned IP address of the ILO gets replies from the ILO.

Any hint or recommendation would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Mike

Re: HP BL465 Blades: ILOs frequently loosing IP address

Strange.

Does "latest SPP" really  mean 2015.06?

At least the smart array firmware shown does not match this SPP (6.62 vs. 6.64).

How about the VC and OA versions?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP BL465 Blades: ILOs frequently loosing IP address

Hello Torsten,

yes, strange it is.

And I downloaded and ran SPP 2015-06-05 on (all) enclosures.

Did a custom inventory, only included all the C7000 firmware and the BL46Xc firmware (as I wanted the customized SPP to be not too big).

As you're pointing towards the smart array FW, you may be right...maybe the update went not well.

Will re-check/re-do.

That's what I see actually:

BladeSystem c7000 DDR2 Onboard Administrator with KVM:  4.40 Dec 08 2014

BladeSystem c7000 Onboard Administrator Tray: 1.7

BladeSystem c7000 Insight Display: 2.4.3

HP VC Flex-10 Enet Module: 4.41 (was updated exclusively, not via SPP)

The ILO2's of the ProLiant BL460c G6 run: 2.27

Thanks for the suggestion

Mike

Re: HP BL465 Blades: ILOs frequently loosing IP address

Hello Torsten,

found out that only the SmartArray controllers are not up2date - everything else is on the most recent version.

I can't imagine that the difference on the SmartArray Controllers from 6.62 to the missing update of 6.64 should be the reason for the ILOs and/OAs to fail.

We never saw this issue until we replaced the old Blade switches with the Flex-10 Modules, updated all components (well, except for some enclosures where the SmartArray controllers didn't update despite being seleccted).

Furthermore the issue comes up on all 8 enclosures we have (all have the same OA modules and same versions for OA firmware and ILO firmware).

What I did notice also is that the Insight Module has not updated properly on all Enclosures.

In most of them, it has version 2.4.3 and in some 2.2.2 .

I don't understand why updating some component fails sometimes - all enclosures are identical in hardware and we always used the same 2 USB sticks...

Anyway, I'm still stuck and have no idea left on what to do at the moment.

Kind regards

Mike

Re: HP BL465 Blades: ILOs frequently loosing IP address

Fans and stuff (likely the insight module too) have to be updated from CLI.

from OA CLI fo

> update show

The smart arrays are not the culprit, I'm sure.

Maybe there are different DHCP servers that conflict each other somehow?

Hope this helps!

Re: HP BL465 Blades: ILOs frequently loosing IP address

Hello Torsten,

thanks for the suggestion with updating/checking the insight / fans via OA CLI - will do that.

About your hint regarding DHCP servers:

We do assign the ILO IP addresses from the OA, using the EBIPA functionality.

So there's no external DHCP server involved and in the network where the ILOs/OAs are, we don't do DHCP.

Thanks and kind regards and have a nice weekend

Mike

Re: HP BL465 Blades: ILOs frequently loosing IP address

Not sure if this is the issue, I cannot access the advisory.

Why not try ILO 4 version 2.10 meanwhile?
