NEW 48GB LRDIMM for BL460c GEN9

Madhu had a server memory config question:

**********

I need to get to 256GB on a BL460c Gen9 E5-2697:

  1. 8x 32GB List $7992
  2. 4x 48GB 792278-B21 List $5596 + 4x 16GB $1596 = $7192

Is Option 2 a valid Config?

As long as the 16s and 32s are both RDIMM or both LRDIMM, then it should be valid. You can't mix and match between R and LR.

BUT, personally would not do that config because you will have the first 128GB of RAM running at Quad Channel and then the second 128GB running at Dual Channel (half the bandwidth). So some VMs will run super-fast and others slower.

I would either go with 8 x 32GB (and keep your 2697s) OR Drop down to the 2695 (slower speed, same cores) or 2690 (2 less cores, same speed) And then use 16 x 16GB DIMMs to get 256 as cheap as possible.

And from John, the server Product Manager:

Option 2 is NOT a valid config for just one processor.

The 792279-B21 48GB Combo kit, is not a single DIMM. It is a combo of 1x 32GB DIMM and 1x 16GB DIMM. This means that ordering one of these kits takes up 2 DIMM slots. Therefore, 4 of these kits will fill all of your slots for one processor.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this.
