Updating of x9720 blade systems c7000

Hey All,

We are looking to apply this package of updates to our HP x9720 rack infrastructure:

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=4058820&prodNameId=4062406&swEnvOID=4004&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-98002-1

However we see that it is only available for Redhat OS. Does it mean that we have to first install a Linux Redhat distro on 1st blade first? Then use it to run the update installation steps? Will it be able to update the OA from the 1st blade's itself?

Re: Updating of x9720 blade systems c7000

I'm not familiar with the IBRIX x9000 series storage systems, but a quick glance to its User Guide shows me many management commands that look exactly like Linux commands (e.g. firewall settings with the "iptables" command).

Maybe the IBRIX software is actually based on RedHat OS? And the maintainers of the HP Busines Support Centre did not have a suitable OS type category for it, or made a poor category choice when adding the update package to the site? In this case, the update package should be useable as-is, without any extra OS installations.

The release notes for the update package contains a list of prerequisites and installation instructions. It says you should have the OA, VC and SAS switch IP addresses and passwords available to you when beginning the update. The update is probably scripted to assume that the OA will be accessible from the 1st blade.

The User Guide for the x9720 has an entire chapter of information on firmware updates. The package you linked might be scripted to do it all automatically, but reading the User Guide might still be useful in giving you a better idea of exactly how each component will be updated.  (And if the automated script fails, the instructions might allow you to recover and complete the update manually.)

Hey,

I installed CentOS on blade1 and run the updates. Actually the update is just making use of network and access details to connect to the various devices to update that's all.
