C7000 with redundant OA - OA module replacement how_to

As HP produced a new Onboard Administrator module, there has been some question on what works with what and how do you do replacements and updates with older OA modules. Monty has provided the following scenarios: There are a couple of scenarios – I assume that you are trying to keep the same version OA Firmware on the replacement OA. The OA firmware sync feature only works with both OA modules of the same hardware type. For different OA hardware types, update the firmware on the active OA to get the same version on both. 1. Replacement OA has same firmware as good OA and is either same hardware type or newer OA with KVM a. Insert replacement OA, enclosure configuration sync will occur automatically from active to standby b. Manually update new (standby) OA static IP settings using Insight Display, OA GUI or OA CLI 2. Replacement OA has older firmware than good OA and is same hardware type a. Insert replacement OA, version mismatch will be detected b. Manually sync the OA Firmware using Insight Display, OA GUI or OA CLI c. After the new OA is rebooted, enclosure configuration sync will occur automatically from active to standby d. Manually update new (standby) OA static IP settings using Insight Display, OA GUI or OA CLI 3. Replacement OA has older firmware than good OA and is newer type with KVM a. Insert replacement OA, version mismatch will be detected b. Manually update the active OA Firmware from a HTTP, FTP or USB key using the OA GUI, OA CLI, or Insight Display using Force option to downgrade (OA v2.41 is minimum version for OA with KVM) c. After the both OAs have rebooted, enclosure configuration sync will occur automatically from active to standby d. Manually update new (standby) OA static IP settings using Insight Display, OA GUI or OA CLI 4. Replacement OA has newer firmware than good OA and same hardware type a. Insert replacement OA, version mismatch will be detected b. Manually update the active OA Firmware from a HTTP, FTP or USB key using the OA GUI, OA CLI, or Insight Display using Force option to downgrade (OA v2.41 is minimum version for OA with KVM) c. Re: C7000 with redundant OA - OA module replacement how_to

Hi, Expert:

Does  that mean  OA Board can be Hot-Plugged in/out for a powered-on C7000 enclosure?

    Thanks

Hi Grei,

Yes, You can hotplug the OA board from a running C7000, but You should have 2 of them present in the same enclosure before doing so to maintain service and functionality.

- also make sure, that You are removing the standby OA module, you can find this info via the oba web interface, You can use the virtual button feature to turn on/off the UID light of the OA module so there is really now doubt you are removing the intended one.

- when possible make sure that the OA module to be inserted is at the same OBA firmware level like the one already present in the C7000, however You will need another C7000 to check/update the OBA firmware in advance. Otherwise You can also do it after You have plugged the new OA module in. This firmware update has to be done manually. As soon as the 2 OA modules are at the same firmware level they will sync and become active/standby again.

- last but not least, when operating in critical and/or production environments its good practice to excercise these steps in a less critical environment.
