This Week in the Cloud: Consistency matters

on ‎05-07-2012 12:37 PM ‎05-07-2012 12:40 PM

If you haven’t caught these already, HP Software has been running a series of cloud think pieces on YouTube. The This Week in the Cloud series features host Paul Muller, HP Software VP and evangelist, as well as a variety of cloud gurus.

The latest episode is a must-see for anyone who wants to know more about OpenStack, the open source cloud management platform on which HP’s chosen to build its Converged Cloud offerings.

Joining Paul is Christian Verstraete, Cloud Source blogger and technologist whose posts on HP Converged Cloud (as well as his Twitter feed) are addictively informative about the latest in cloud computing and the way cloud is changing IT.

With cloud standards still being defined, choosing a stack (or cloud management platform) has implications for enterprises moving workloads to the cloud. As Christian points out, consistency in your cloud environment wins you a host of efficiencies (kind of the same way that that standardization does in your in-house data center):

  • Your people don’t need to be trained on and master different environments.
  • You facilitate cloud bursting (moving workloads from one cloud to another), because you’re not moving work from one environment to another.
  • You’re able to maintain the link between the workload and associated data, even if you are cloud bursting.
