Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ do not work on Storageworks 4/8 switch

Good morning to all, been a long time here.

I am currently supporting a customer who has a peculiar problem.

We installed a new sfp (A7446B) on each Storageworks 4/8 switch to include a new server in the SAN. Unfortunately, the SFPs do not work, producing a slow amber LED blinking on the port and having the error "Laser_flt" on each.

We always ordered A7446B for these switches but we always received JDS Uniphase ones (8 per switch) which work like a charm.

We also had issues with these SFPs with a Brocade 200E switches (same exactly as the Storageworks 4/8, just not HP branded); they just do not work.

Fabric OS on the switches is 5.3.0 .

Is there maybe a firmware issue on the switch which we can upgrade to see these SFPs?

Your quick replies will be appreciated and points will be rewarded accordingly.

Thanks and regards!
Vince

Re: Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ do not work on Storageworks 4/8 switch

Hi,

I understand that you have problem with SFP on Brocade 200E switch model.
I guess there should not be any problem with Firmware on 200E switch.

The SFPs you are usings are meant for HP B-series switches and 200E is purely Brocade switch.

Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ SFPs may not be compatible for 200E.

See SFP compatibilty matrix for 200E.

Re: Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ do not work on Storageworks 4/8 switch

Thanks for your replies but I didn't understand the last entry you made.

What is the "B-Series FC Switch Connectivity streams"?

Also, I do not want to perform a firmware upgrade on the switches unless I really need to. I would need somebody (for HP preferred) to reply me whether these are compatible or not.

If not, I don't know why HP use them for PN A7446B!

Re: Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ do not work on Storageworks 4/8 switch

I've checked some old installation reports and first saw the use of AVAGO SFPs supplied by HP in late 2006. The output is from a simple "sfpshow" command, so I don't have details about the model number.

Re: Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ do not work on Storageworks 4/8 switch

Thanks Uwe, I think these are more modern than that though cuz they are 4G.

We never had them working on Brocade 200e switches but never performed firmware upgrade to check.

Maybe somebody can shed any light about this? Some advisory?

Re: Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ do not work on Storageworks 4/8 switch

Vince, the SFPs from 2006 were 4G devices, too.

But I agree that only somebody who has the detail information can really answer the question.

Re: Avago AFBR-57R6AEZ do not work on Storageworks 4/8 switch

Problem solved. Seems the FC cables were not connected properly to the GBICs.

Just reinserting the cables worked fine.

No problem with the GBICs!

Thanks to all who answered.
