Brocade blade switches & EVA

Hi,

I'm looking to a possible scalability option for a current installation done with blades and EVA.

There is one single blade enclosure that has in the mezzanine slots 3 and 4 two FC switches with 12 ports active at 4Gb.

The external uplinks of the FC SWs are used to connect to an EVA 4400 old model (without the embedded switch).

I'm planning to add more blade enclosures (yes, not servers, more blade enclosure with similar FC configs) and have to connect them to the EVA to have boot from SAN and DB storage.

What would you recommend?

I thought of having two independent FC external switches from brocade and connect to them all the blades FC switches and the EVA redundant paths.

I'm not sure if a better way or solution would exist, and keeping costs low.

The other doubt I have is if a switch port from blades FC switches requires some licenses to be connected to another brocade external switch. (Apparently virtual connect does not require it but here unfortunately I have a normal FC switch b4/12)

Thanks

The only way to get an external switch (1 or 2 as per your business demand) and put it b/w your blade encl and EVA. About the license you may execute licenseshow and check what all lic you have. I believe fabric lic should be there in switch by default.

Re: Brocade blade switches & EVA

Hi Bhavnish,

thanks for your quick reply.

The license in the switch is the basic one that comes with it, 12 ports enabled out of 24 and we are using the dynamic allocation feature of the switch to the ports.

The real question here is, if I connect the EVA to that switch is not a problem... but what if I put an external switch in the middle?

Will I require a license to connect two F_Ports together and have the FC traffic pass from the blade FC switch to the external FC Switch and finally arrive on the EVA, or is it like a networking switch and that does not require a license?

FC licensing is a real nightmare to be understood and in terms of pricing.

Thanks

Yes Robl. In-case of external switch you need to have fabric license installed on switch :(

Re: Brocade blade switches & EVA

Hi, the licenceshow command shows the following.

SANSW1:admin> licenseshow
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:
Web license
Zoning license
Fabric license

does it mean I don't need any additional license to interconnect switches?

Or do I need any of these shown in the quickspecs? (but they don't seem to be required.

Hi Robl,

You already have fabric license so that will fulfill your requirement.

Thanks,
